In order to create a community archive you need:

• The Comma software. The Commanet ‘Package’ provides the Comma software, three years support and web hosting - allowing you to put your archive on the web.
• A PC (with CD-RW drive), You do not need a very powerful computer, but a DVD writer is essential for backups.
• A scanner (100% TWAIN compatible)
• A microphone

Comma software enables you to scan photographs and documents, and add text and oral reminiscences and video clips in an easy to search database.

Free Comma Taster software

You can try out the Comma software by downloading our Taster which allows the building of a non-redistributable archive of unlimited size from here.

Any archive built can be upgraded to a full publishing version to enable the production of CDs and publishing on the Commanet website.

Every donor to an archive assigns the digital publishing rights in their records to the group. Donors only need to sign a single Copyright Release Form to cover all their records.

Many people buy expensive and un-necessary hardware and software to undertake a Commanet project.

You can save buying an office type package by downloading the good and completely free Open Office Suite from www.openoffice.org.

For sound editing you could try the versatile and completely free editor Audacity from audacity.sourceforge.net

This could free money for expensive but truly useful tools like the solid state sound recorder that we suggest, the Edirol R-09. This is extremely easy to use and is of the highest, truly archive, quality.
