     Searching for a particular record

You can find records that interest you by using the search pages.
These allow you to find all records that share descriptions or have particular attributes.

Note: If you want to search for a piece of text (in caption, reminiscence, caption and location) then you MUST do this first.

Example 1:
Searching for a place, for instance:

1     Click in the text box and type in union
2 Press Search
3 After a pause notice that you will see something on the left of the screen like "You have found 131 records from the full archive of 25200"
4 If you want to refine the search then click on, for instance, work
5 On the next screen choose mining
6 Notice that the number found will have been greatly reduced
7 To view the records that feature mining work and the word union click View results
8 On the top bar you will see a white (inactive) and a black arrow (active). Click the active arrow to see the second page of thumbnails
9 Any thumbnail with a yellow spot underneath it has hotspots (named points) on it.
10 Click a thumbnail.
11 Clicking on the image makes it larger/smaller
12 Using the arrows moves between the records you have found.

Example 2:

 Starting a fresh search
To start a new search click clear and the previous search will be forgotten.

To search for a piece of text put the word in the text search box. This box is only visible when nothing else has been searched for, If the box is not visible then choose clear first.

Note: Words entered into the freetext search box are treated as being added together so that, for example, a search for fruit might return 21 records, market get 255, but fruit market get 274 hits. Remember that this means that a record mentions fruit OR market. Only some records actually have both words in them.

Words of three or less characters are ignored.
